While many small F&B businesses in Singapore were thinking outside the box to sustain their businesses amidst the COVID-19 crisis, a huge group of hawkers found it extremely difficult to make ends meet either because of the challenges faced with high commission rates on existing delivery platforms, or their lack of technology savviness – a very common problem faced by the elderly hawkers.

Built upon the desire to support local, BySGForSG is a not-for-profit platform / initiative conceptualised to bridge this gap for hawkers and other small F&B businesses by helping them retain most of their profit margins and resolve the technological challenges of taking their businesses online. Unlike existing food delivery platforms, there are no onboarding or administration fees and BySGForSG only charges vendors a low 5% commission fee based on the total food bill, all of which are donated to the YMCA Wok The Talk (WTT) initiative.

To show support for this meaningful initiative, The Good Folks took on BySGforSG as a pro-bono project and managed all publicity efforts for its launch, securing notable features by key media publications including The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, The New Paper, Yahoo!, CNA, SethLui.com, 8world, Avenue One, SWW and Men‘s Folio. Leveraging on our strong relationships with key personalities in Singapore, we also generated substantial social media buzz about BySGForSG.

BySGForSG has since re-branded as MAKAN GURU, a social enterprise focused on preserving local hawker culture and the environment. Find out more information about MAKAN GURU here.
